At Wickliffe Christian Church July 24, members of the Austintown Block Watch threw a party with a purpose: Tell the community about how they keep Austintown safe.

George Fannin, one of four captains of the organization, displays stickers on his truck declaring he is a member of the watch group.

“Each captain patrols the area on a certain shift. Mine is late night weekends, sometimes until 4 or 5 a.m.,” said Fannin.

The meetings are the first Tuesday of every month and the members are always looking for help.

While the purpose was serious, the men and women of the Block Watch didn’t skip out on fun. The event had a clown for the children, face painting, food, raffles and music.

Kathy Bowman showed her archery prowess to a large crowd and displayed her recent archery gold medal from the Senior Olympics.

The Austintown Fire Department, as well as the Canine Unit, met the children and thanked the Block Watch for its work.
