The hot weather didn’t seem to bug the kids at Boardman Township Park’s Adventure Camp during its third session that began July 19.

The 27 children enjoyed switching between science, team building, creative arts and sports activities inspired by insects during the two-week camp.

“I love this camp,” said 10-year-old Anna-Licia Robinson. “It’s amazing.”

Park Recreation Director Karen McCallum started the program for children kindergarten through 12-years-old in 2003 when she began working at the park and tries to incorporate a structured schedule.

Each day, the children are divided into groups by age and rotate through various activities every 40 minutes. If the weather is too hot, the time is shortened to 30 minutes and an indoor group activity is planned.

“We’re doing stuff you can’t do in the classroom,” said McCallum.

Eleven-year-old Janae Cruz has attended all the camp sessions each summer since 2005 and likes everything about it. During the first week, the kids played dodge ball and capture the flag at Kidtown. They created tie-dyed butterflies and walked the stream looking for bugs and insects.

“We found a frog,” said Cruz.

The last camp session will begin Monday at Masters Pavilion and activities will be themed around camping. The cost is $130 for the two-week session and will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interested campers can register at the park office.
