Veggie Bingo set for Aug. 8

Special to The Vindicator

YOUNGSTOWN

Place:Knox Bldg

110 W. Federal St., Youngstown

Grow Youngstown is sponsoring Veggie Bingo from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Lemon Grove, 122 W. Federal St.

Players will have the chance to meet area farmers, network with fellow gardeners and win prizes.

Prizes include a dozen ears of corn, a basket of produce from Red Basket Farm, a gift certificate to the North Side Farmers Market, red wigglers for vermin-composting and other locally produced food. There also is a cash grand prize for the garden with the most points.

The event is hosted by Chicago-based Veggie Bingo founder Martha Bayne. The first game will be called by Mayor Jay Williams. Other callers include members of the Mahoning Valley’s community gardening groups, local food producers and organizers of Youngstown’s Farmer’s Market.

Community gardens from Trumbull and Mahoning counties are invited to participate.

To be eligible for the grand prize, participants must register a community garden with Grow Youngstown by Aug. 5, be growing food this season and have a membership (people with garden plots) of at least five people.

Register a garden by contacting Elsa Higby at elsa@growyoungstown.org or calling 330-286-0688.

Participants do not have to belong to a garden to play. Instead, a garden may be chosen to play for.

Representatives of community gardens and agricultural businesses or organizations are needed to act as callers.

If interested in being a caller, contact Elsa Higby at elsa@growyoungstown.org or 330-286-0688 or Suzannah Tartan at suzannah@tartanhunt.com.
