Laid-off Cleveland teachers to be recalled

CLEVELAND (AP) — Teachers in Cleveland have ratified a new contract that will allow the district to recall many of the roughly 650 union members who were laid off last month.

The three-year deal won 82 percent approval in voting that ended Wednesday. It reflects an estimated $17 million in concessions, including the elimination of paid training days and higher out-of-pocket costs for health care.

The recalls are expected to begin in mid-August.

The contract could be revisited in the second or third years if the school system projects a deficit of more than $5 million or receives more than $5 million in new money that could go toward teacher wages and benefits.
