Residents of the city and township may participate in a National Night Out event from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Harding Park bandstand, 249 Roosevelt Drive.

Hubbard Township Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 85 is sponsoring the event, which is part of the 27th annual National Night Out crime-and-drug-prevention event.

Police officers will distribute children’s identification kits to parents or guardians in the township and city. The kits were donated by Hubbard Township FOP and are in collaboration with the National Child Identification Program. The program’s goal is to fingerprint all 60 million children in the United States. The ID kit includes an inkless fingerprint card, wallet card and DNA collection swabs.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and refreshments will be provided.

From 7 to 10 p.m. that day, residents in neighborhoods throughout the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police.

Hubbard joins some 14,625 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world in the observance. More than 36.7 million people are expected to participate in “America’s night out against crime," which is supported in part by TARGET, a national corporate sponsor.

The goals of the observance are to: heighten crime-and-drug- prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and

police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
