Dr. Ernest Perry’s legacy

Dr. Ernest Perry’s legacy

Ernest Perry, M.D., F.A.C.S., was a physician and surgeon, a scholar, a teacher, a leader and a gift to our community for 73 years. Dr. Perry was the symbol of what a physician should be — competent, caring, compassionate, honest. He cured when he could, but comforted always. His patients loved him, his colleagues respected him, and the community leaders listened to him. He gave so much of his talents, and of himself, and touched the lives of thousands. He served well, lived well and loved much. What a legacy!

Because of his deeper understanding of human nature, Dr. Perry became a unifier among races, religions and political forces. This became clear during the long calling hours on Sunday, attended by thousands — young and old, white and black, Christians, Jews, Muslims and folks of other religions. Males and females of all walks of life, came to pay their respects, and to say their final goodbyes to this great man. He belonged to the community, he belonged to all of us. Our “Ernie” will be greatly missed, not only by the family he loved, and lived for, but by all of us. Whether you agreed or disagreed with him, his unmistakable half smile won you over.

I first met Dr. Perry in 1967, when he was still a surgical resident, at what used to be the Youngstown Hospital Association (YHA). He often assisted me when I did surgery at YHA. I was so impressed with him, and predicted a great future for the young man. We became colleagues and friends over the years. He was always thoughtful, respectful, but highly principled. I always admired him, respected him and learned from him. All his colleagues and friends, will miss him dearly. He leaves a vacuum in our community.

Thanks for the memories, Ernie. Thanks for the gifts. Thanks for leaving our community better than when you found it. May you rest in peace.
