JAMESTOWN, N.Y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ start to the second half of the New York-Penn League schedule was short-circuited on Wednesday night.

The Scrappers led the Jamestown Jammers, 1-0, in the third inning at Russell Diethrick Park before rain and lightning forced the contest to be suspended.

The game will be resumed today at 6:05 p.m., before the teams play their regular-scheduled game, which will be a seven-inning contest.

Scrappers starting pitcher Owen Dew had a good performance going when the rains came.

Dew (1-2, 2.94) allowed just one hit, a leadoff triple by Daniel Black, before retiring the next nine batters.

The Scrappers took the lead in the third inning on a RBI groundout by Kevin Fontanez, his fourth run driven in of the season.

That hit scored Dan DeGeorge, who had singled.

The Scrappers (14-24), who have lost five straight games, are eight games behind Jamestown (21-15) in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.

Mahoning Valley also plays at Jamestown on Friday night (7:05 p.m.) before returning home to Eastwood Field for a two-game series on Saturday (7:05 p.m.) and Sunday (5:05 p.m.) against Williamsport.

The Scrappers go to Batavia for two games on Monday and Tuesday, before returning home for a six-game homestand against Tri-City and Aberdeen from Aug. 4-9.

The series against Tri-City will mark the return to Eastwood Field of former Youngstown State standout Jacke Healey, who was drafted in the 27th round of June’s major-league draft by the Houston Astros.

Saturday’s game against Williamsport will also feature the appearance of Days of Our Lives star Galen Gering, who plays Rafe Hernandez on the daytime show. A VIP meet and greet package is available prior to the game, starting at 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday the Scrappers will host Chevrolet Cruze Night.

It’s also PNC Family Fun Day, Ohio State Parks & Lodges Getaway Giveway, and Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Change Bandit Kick-Off.
