The Needle’s Eye of Southside Ministries, 74 Kenmore Ave., is offering a new, free tutoring program for students in first through 12th grades.
The program was developed by Coree Jacobs, a volunteer of The Needle’s Eye and an elementary- education student at Youngstown State University; Janine Motley, retired teacher; and Kayla Johnson, an information- technology professional.
The tutorial program, starting Sept. 13, will focus on core-skill development in reading, writing and math. Children will receive help with homework and assignments.
The Princess bimonthly program for girls age 5 to 12 will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, beginning Aug. 14. Jacobs will lead the program to develop self-esteem, social skills and Christian values to build a foundation for a positive lifestyle.
Butterfly Activity Day is a weekly mentoring group for girls age 11 to 14 and meets from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays. Activities include discussion, journaling, responsibility charts, crafts, Bible and etiquette lessons.
Good News Club, a drug- and alcohol-prevention program for boys and girls, will continue with meetings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The theme for September will be “Friends.” A fall carnival is scheduled at the end of the month.
Mature Leaders program is divided into two groups of boys and girls, age 12-15 and 16-19. The group meets from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Discussions and community service are the main elements of this group.
In January, Johnson will teach computer skills; classes will be announced.
The Needle’s Eye is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations from the general public, churches and philanthropic gifts. Since it is a Christian counseling center, all programs are free. The Needle’s Eye was founded by the late Irma Davis; her daughter, Marilyn Davis-Lane, is director.
