COLUMBUS

Downplay, a Columbus-based rock band fronted by Salem native Dustin Bates, has signed a recording contract with Epic Records and will release its debut album early next year.

The band, which has three independent albums under its belt, will spend the next few months writing and recording.

“My focus is on making the best album I possibly can,” said Bates, adding the band will likely go on a yearlong tour after its release.

“When I started my first band, it was with the dream of a nationwide tour and a song on the radio,” said Bates. “It is likely going to become a reality, and I couldn’t be more excited.”

The other members of the band are Cleveland natives Brandon Zano, guitar and vocals; Mike Mealey, bass; Brian Patrick, drums; and Columbus native Trevor Connor, guitar.
