A resident on Princeton Avenue at Walnut Street told police she saw a small bear cub near the fence while she was mowing grass about 5 p.m. Tuesday. She said the animal ran east on Elmwood Avenue. No other reports have been made.

Open house at center

YOUNGSTOWN

An open house will be at the newly renovated Women’s Center, 64 Ridge Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m. today.

The public will have the opportunity to tour the facility, meet the new program staff and learn about the center’s services.

Refreshments will be served.

$500 scholarships

New Springfield

Two local teens were rewarded with a $500 scholarship each for their duct-tape prom outfits.

Sara Cummings, of Springfield, and James Ludt, of Struthers, finished in fourth place in the 10th annual Stuck at Prom scholarship contest sponsored nationwide by Duck Tape. They were selected by the company to be in the top 10 out of 248 couples. Online voting for the winners began June 18.

The pair, who attended the Cardinal Mooney High School prom, used 26 rolls of duct tape to make their purple, yellow and green outfits.

Temporary closing

POLAND

The Mahoning County engineer will close Miller Road between Kansas and Struthers roads Tuesday through Thursday next week and Aug. 8 to replace two culverts. The road will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, and traffic will be detoured along Struthers and Arrel roads.

Lottery winner

SALEM

A city man won a top prize in an Ohio Lottery game. Dean M. Heath won $110,000 after he matched all five numbers drawn in the July 16 Rolling Cash 5 game. After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, Heath will receive a check for $75,900. Heath purchased the winning Rolling Cash 5 ticket at Kendricks Corner Carryout. He used auto lotto. Kendricks Corner Carryout, 981 N. Ellsworth Ave., Salem, receives a $500 agent bonus for selling the winning ticket.
