AHEPA donates $10,000 to YSU for scholarship fund

Chapter 89 Youngstown of the American Hellenic Education and Progressive Association has donated $10,000 to Youngstown State University to establish a student scholarship fund.

The check was presented Wednesday to YSU President Cynthia E. Anderson during a meeting in the president’s office on the YSU campus.

“I want to thank AHEPA, its leaders and the entire Greek community for this wonderful donation that will help give students the opportunity to attend, excel and succeed at YSU,” Anderson said.

Attending the check presentation ceremony were several members of Lincoln Chapter 89, including Atty. Jim Denney, president; Dr. Gus Mavrigian, secretary; John Manolukas, treasurer and president of AHEPA 89 Inc.; George Limbert, chair of the Lincoln Chapter 89 Foundation; Harry Meshel, past president; George Zographides, past president; Greg Giannos, past president; and Cleo Zambetes, past supreme president; and Jonathan Conrad, board member AHEPA 89 Inc.

The scholarship will be available to members and family of AHEPA and its affiliated organizations, including the Daughters of Penelope, the Sons of Pericles and the Maids of Athena.

AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. The Association was established in 1922 by Greek-Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK.

The mission of AHEPA is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
