New fire station

BRISTOLVILLE

The Bristol Township Fire Department will break ground on its new fire station at 10 a.m. Aug. 5 at 2100 Greenville Road (state Route 88), just west of state Route 45.

The project is paid for through a $2.235 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Fire Station Construction Grant Program.

The new station will have living quarters and a modern training area.

15-day closing set

COLUMBIANA

A portion of U.S. Route 30 will be closed for 15 days beginning Tuesday. Route 30 in Hanover Township will be closed just west of the junction of state Route 9 in Kensington to repair a bridge over Sandy Creek.

Beginning at U.S. 30 and state Route 183 in Minerva, traffic will be routed north to state Route 172 in New Frankiln, then east to state Route 172 to state Route 9 south in New Garden. The entire project will be completed Sept. 30.

Immunization clinic

Niles

The city health department will have an immunization clinic for students entering seventh grade. The clinic, which covers tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, is from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the Niles City Health Department, 34 W. State St.

Immunizations are mandatory for students who will be in seventh grade this fall. Cost is $3 but free to those with Medicaid or who are uninsured. Parents should bring a copy of their child’s immunization record.

Tax bills mailed

LISBON

Columbiana County Treasurer Nick Barborak has announced that real-estate tax statements for the second half of 2009 have been mailed. Taxpayers who have not received a statement should call his office. “The law does not provide a defense against penalties if a statement is not received by a taxpayer,” Barborak said.

The payments must be postmarked or received by the treasurer no later than Sept. 10. Taxes will be considered timely if the payment is postmarked on or before the due date. The penalty for late payment is 10 percent of the outstanding tax.

Special session

BROOKFIELD

The township trustees will have a special session at 6 p.m. today at the township offices at 6844 Strimbu Drive. The board will adjourn into an executive session to discuss personnel.

Semi-annual shoe sale

Alliance

Top-quality and name-brand shoes will be offered at the semiannual Michele’s Shoe sale at the Alliance Community Hospital, 200 E. State St., from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday. The sale will be in Conference Room 1-A of the hospital.

Payment can be made with cash, check or credit card. All proceeds from the sale will be used to enhance the programs and projects at the hospital.

Aggravated menacing

liberty

Police arrested Larry Patterson, 63, of Trumbull Court on charges of aggravated menacing, having a weapon under disability, tampering with evidence and obstruction of official business after an incident about 8:45 p.m. Friday. Police were called to the scene after a report of a man firing a gun.

Patterson told police he fired a gun into the ground and into the air to break up a fight. Then he told police he had given the gun to someone who had left the scene. No casings were found.

Patterson was taken to Trumbull County Jail and remains there after failing to post bond.

Rape of 7-year-old

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating the reported rape of a 7-year-old Campbell girl earlier this month. According to police reports, the girl’s mother told police the girl had complained of pain after visiting a relative. The girl’s male cousin, listed between 16 and 18 years old, is listed as a suspect in police reports.
