A man has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in Mercer County.
Calvin Young, 25, pleaded guilty to the murder of Carolyn McVehil, 21, of Sharon. Young shot her at her home Jan. 27, then fled to New Castle, where he was arrested after a four-hour standoff.
He also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for beating two other women who were at McVehil’s home.
Young was sentenced Friday in Mercer County Common Pleas court to 27 to 54 years in prison. He must serve 27 years before he is eligible for parole, said Mercer County District Attorney Robert Kochems.

ACTION, a faith-based community organizing group, will conduct a “Come and See” program, a leadership-training workshop designed to outline the principles of community organizing, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at New Creation Missionary Baptist Church, 2955 Caleb Drive NW.
The Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods session will be led by organizers affiliated with the Chicago-based Gamaliel Foundation, an organization dedicated to effective community organizing.

‘Safety Day’ Saturday
North Jackson
Jackson Township will have a “Safety Day” on Saturday at the Jackson Township Government Center, 10613 Mahoning Ave. The free event will feature Identi-Kits, a child-seat installation and inspection station, inflatable play area and free refreshments.
Representations from the Jackson police and fire departments, a Medevac helicopter team, police dog and Lanes emergency medical services will give demonstrations throughout the day.
Annual VA clinic picnic

The Volunteers of the Veterans Affairs Youngstown Outpatient Clinic, 2031 Belmont Ave., is having its ninth annual picnic for area veterans and patients of the VA Clinic on Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the clinic parking lot. There will be food, soft drinks, snacks and a raffle. All veterans are welcome.
