Soaked, sunk: Scrappers fall in five innings
Staff report
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.
Unfortunately for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Saturday, Kirk Wetmore’s night ended before it could get more wet.
Wetmore, the Scrappers’ starter, lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs (all earned) on three hits and two walks as Mahoning Valley fell to Williamsport 7-1 in a rain-shortened five-inning game.
Wetmore (0-5) saw his ERA jump to 8.58.
Brian Heere had two hits, including a triple, and scored the lone run for the Scrappers (14-22), who are tied with Auburn for the worst record in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League.
Aaron Fields had the team’s only other hit. He also stole a base.
Jeff Lanning hit a three-run homer in the first inning to lead the Crosscutters (18-18), who are in fourth place in the six-team Pinckney Division.
Mahoning Valley returns home today for a two-game series against State College. Today’s game begins at 5:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field and features at Webkinz giveaway for kids.
The Scrappers are off Tuesday then head to Jamestown for a three-game set.
