Detectives are investigating a shooting early Saturday that sent a man to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Responding to a 911 call at 2:22 a.m., police went to a Francis Avenue address, where they found Anthony Blackwell shot in the leg. No further details were available at press time.

Road closed 8 hours

COITSVILLE

Coitsville-Hubbard Road (state Route 616) between McGuffey Road and Oak Street Extension reopened about 7 p.m. Saturday after having been closed for about eight hours because an oil- carrying truck overturned.

The Coitsville Fire Department and the Mahoning County Haz-Mat Team cleaned up after the spill, a 911 dispatcher said. No injuries were reported. Further details were not available late Saturday. The Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

2 blood drives

Two blood drives are planned for Addalin Gravatt, a 5-year-old Mercer girl recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

She is the daughter of Carl and Bobbi Jo Gravatt. The blood drives are to help replenish the community blood supply, which has been used to help her.

The first blood drive is from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday at Countryside, a personal-care home at 8221 Lamor Road, Mercer. The second is from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Quality Life Services, 612 N. Main St., Butler, Pa.

Scrap-tire collection

The village will have its annual scrap-tire collection beginning Monday. Tires can be dropped off at the village garage from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through Aug. 6. There will be curbside pickup Monday and Aug. 2 only. Residents are limited to four tires per residence (no rims). Call the municipal building with any questions at 330-530-5472.

Months-long closing

The southern section of West Golf Drive in Mill Creek MetroParks will close Monday for construction.

The construction is part of a drive-improvement project and will affect West Golf from U.S. Route 224 to the Mill Creek Golf Course.

The project, funded by the MetroParks and Ohio Department of Transportation, includes pavement replacement, aggregate-base repair, new pavement markings, aggregate shoulders, guardrail and culvert replacement, drainage work, headwall construction, curbing, grading, topsoil placement and seeding.

Access to several MetroParks facilities will be maintained from the Shields Road entrance to West Golf Drive, including the Mill Creek Park Golf Course, Stitt Pavilion and Recreation Field.

That portion of West Golf is expected to be closed for several months.

‘Roots of Hope’ session

“Cultivating the Roots of Hope” will be the theme of a meeting from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Common Ground Church Community, 2310 W. South Range Road, of faith-based groups working to alleviate hunger and poverty in the Mahoning Valley.

Ted Strickland’s office of faith-based and community initiatives; Steve Fortenberry, pastor of Common Ground and executive director of Goodness Grows, a faith-based agricultural nonprofit group; and Greg Bowman, formerly of the Rodale Institute.
