District team goes 2-1

In the first game of district play July 10, the Canfield 10-year-old Little League District Team beat Girard, 7-0. Pitchers Nick O’Hara, Jimmy Fitzgerald and Dominic Velasquez combined to throw a two-hit shutout. Leading the offense were Angelo Petracci (2-for-2, two RBI) and Will Dawson (double, two runs scored).

The team lost July 12 by one run (3-2) to Howland. Pitchers Jack Rafoth and Ian McGraw combined to give up five hits in six full innings. Hitting was led by Rafoth (2-for-3, RBI) and Fitzgerald (1-for-2, RBI.)

On July 14, the team defeated Struthers 19-1 at Boardman’s Field of Dreams. Pitchers were Ryan Stefanec and Anthony Pacifico, who combined for a two-hit win in four innings. Big hitters were Rafoth, (2-for-3, two triples, two RBIs and two runs); O’Hara (triple and three runs); McGraw, (3-for-4, five RBIs and three runs); Petracci (2-for-2, four RBIs and four runs) and Velasquez (2-for-3. four RBIs and one run). Fitzgerald went 3-for-3 with one RBI.

“The win was a total team effort, deserving total team recognition,” said manager John Petracci.

Group tickets available for football season

The Youngstown State Athletic Department has group football tickets available.

High school soccer officials classes set

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has soccer officiating classes available.

The 25-hour course is conducted by the Mahoning Valley Soccer Officials Association at the end of July and first week in August at the Niles Wellness Center.

Longest drive contest comes to Poland

RE/MAX Valley Real Estate in Boardman and Revere Run Golf Course in Poland will team up to host the third annual Mahoning Valley Local Qualification event for the 2010 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship July 31 at Revere Run Golf Course.

All proceeds will be donated to Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.

The competition has seven divisions. The Open and Senior Division road to the RE/MAX World Finals begins at Revere Run Golf Course. The event tees off at 5 p.m. and qualifying will continue until 9 p.m. No preregistration is necessary.

Based on total entries, as many as six Open Division hitters will advance from the Mahoning Valley to the Region 1 Championships, later this summer at Oakland Beach Golf Club, Conneaut Lake, Pa.

Local entry fees are $40 for six balls, six swings, and six chances for glory.

Adding to this year’s local competition will be an on-the-side “Doubles Tournament” which can be entered along with a long driving buddy. The best drives from each team will be totaled and the longest combined drives will win first, second, and third-place prizes donated by Dick’s Sporting Goods. For information, call 330-629-9200.

YSU-Penn State tickets to be sold Aug. 9

Youngstown State students can purchase YSU at Penn State football tickets on August 9.

YSU student with a valid ID will be allowed to purchase one ticket each for the Sept. 4 game against the Nittany Lions.

Each ticket is $72, which includes a processing fee.

Football hospitality tents now available

The Youngstown State Athletic Department is taking reservations for football hospitality tents.

Tents are available in a variety options and offer a special game-day experience for Penguins fans.

Tents are available in 20x20 ($195), 20x30 ($235) and 20x40 ($275) sizes.

That cost includes chairs and two tables, trash containers and two game day parking passes in the Penguin Party Lot (M-7).

Additional tailgate parking passes, tables and chairs are available to purchase.

Pan Atlas has bus trip to YSU-Penn St. game

Pan Atlas Traveline is offering same-day round-trip motorcoach transportation to the Youngstown State at Penn State football game on Sept. 4 at noon.

The Penguins play the Big Ten’s Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa.

The cost is $50 per person and covers the cost of transportation and driver gratuity.

It does not include a game ticket. The bus will depart from YSU’s M-24 Parking Lot at 6:30 a.m. and return immediately following the game.
