McDonald’s is being rebuilt

Boardman

A McDonald’s restaurant on Western Reserve Road is being rebuilt on the same location.

The fast-food restaurant at 900 Western Reserve Road was constructed in 1997 with a prefabricated building, which caused difficulties when the company tried to upgrade the kitchen, said Jason Loree, Boardman Township administrator.

Loree said it was cheaper for the owners to demolish the building.

The new McDonald’s is expected to be completed by the end of summer. In addition to an updated kitchen, owners are planning to include a fireplace, flat-screen TV and wireless Internet access.

The Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council and the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition — government groups representing nearly 600,000 customers of FirstEnergy Corp.’s three Ohio utility companies — have agreed to support FirstEnergy’s Ohio Electric Security Plan. Under the proposed ESP, base distribution rates will remain in place through May 31, 2014. The plan also outlines a competitive bidding process to establish generation supply and pricing. In addition, the utilities — Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric Illuminating and Toledo Edison — would provide their service territories with $3 million for economic development and $1.5 million for low-income customer assistance programs.

Union Square Sparkle to close

youngstown

The Sparkle Supermarket in the Union Square Plaza will close July 31 after 40 years in business. A number of factors contributed to the closure, including the recent opening of a Walmart Super Center nearby and a national trend among consumers to favor corporately owned grocery conglomerates, owner Charles Zander said in a press release. The Cafaro Company, which owns Union Square Plaza, is working with potential tenants for the vacant space.
