Gracie, a chocolate lab belonging to Angels for Animals volunteer Sheri Bartolotti, of Salem, just couldn’t take the heat anymore at the Doggie Daze Festival and Adopt-A-Thon and decided to cool off in one of the kiddie pools set up in the parking lot for the dogs.

On one of the dog days of summer, Angels for Animals held its 5th annual Doggie Daze Festival and Adopt-A-Thon July 10. The festival is a reunion for dogs who were adopted from the facility and gives the dogs a chance to see their litter mates again.

“We would like to thank the community for adopting abandoned and homeless dogs,” said Diane Less, founder of Angels for Animals.

Scheduled events at the festival included a best dressed dog contest, a first aid demo, a dog owner look-alike contest, a grooming demo with Jessica Chismar, a Chinese auction and a kids puppy chow eating contest.

Local children’s book author Judith Lynn Cvetkovic was at the festival to sign copies of her books “Mandy’s Lost Adventure” and “Mandy and Star’s Sheep Ranch Getaway.”

Angels for Animals is also conducting a petition drive to outlaw dog auctions in Ohio. Ohio is one of the last seven states that allows dog auctions. The public can stop at the front desk of the facility, located at 4750 W. South Range Road, Canfield, to sign the petition and the organization is also looking for petitioners.

A news conference will be held at noon on Wednesday at the facility with Sen. Joe Schiavoni in attendance. For more information, contact Less at 330-502-5352.

Vendors and sponsors included Bounce Around, Brookfield Fire Department K-9 Search and Rescue Team, Cobblestone Corner, Come Stay & Play, Farmers Insurance Dog Identikits, Green Light Unlimited, Invisible Fence Youngstown, It’s a Paw Thing LLC, PetCo Boardman, Pet Lodge USA, Renee Zona, The Grooming Genie, The Learning Dog Inc., Two Sisters and Two Sons Inc. and Wholly Crap.

Visiting animal welfare groups were Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Birds in Flight, Canine Crusaders, For The Dogs, Golden Treasures Rescue, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary and WAGS.

Cvetkovic, of Liberty, donated 50 percent of her books’ proceeds to Angels for Animals. She is currently working on a third book.

The festival also offered live demonstrations all day and pony rides.
