Two Canfield children operated one of 10,000 lemonade stands nationwide and helped raise money for cancer research.

Ten-year-old Michael and 7-year-old Erin Chaplow started their summer with a cause. They raised $168.11 by taking part in Lemonade Weekend for the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation June 12-13.

Kim Chaplow read a Vindicator story about 4-year-old Alexandra Scott’s battle with cancer and the child’s determination to raise money by having a lemonade stand so doctors could find a cure for cancer. She then visited the foundation’s website and shared the idea with her kids.

“They love lemonade stands,” said Chaplow about her children. “And they thought this would be cool.”

The children created fliers and passed them out to neighbors. They baked cookies, brownies and Rice Krispie treats and made lemonade. With a table, a couple chairs and an umbrella to shield them from the sun, they set out to sell for two hours in their neighborhood.

“They were having so much fun they stayed four hours each day,” Kim said.

More than 20 neighbors took advantage of four pitchers of the beverage and sweet treats being offered for 25 cents. Some neighbors even wrote checks.

“I thought our neighbors were really generous,” said Michael.

Erin said she believes they will probably do this next year and Michael has plans for improvement.

“We might bake some more cookies and brownies,” Michael said. “Brownies and lemonade were the best sellers.”

Kim said she wants to notify people visiting the Old North Church by passing out more fliers next year, but this year, she is proud of her children.

Scott passed away in 2004, at the age of 8. Since her first lemonade stand in 2000, the foundation has raised more than $12 million for cancer research from people hosting lemonade stands.
