Canfield trustees pave the way for road work

Residents on four township roads will be driving on fresh pavement by the end of the summer.

The township trustees voted during their July 13 evening meeting to begin a 2010 paving and resurfacing project Aug. 16 that will last roughly one week, said Chairwoman Marie Cartwright.

Cartwright said the project will encompass East Pebble Beach and Cloisters drives and St. Elia Way and Pleasant Valley ways.

“We do this paving project almost every year,” she said.

Each year the township administration takes time to inspect the roads to determine which ones are most in need of resurfacing, Cartwright said.

“These roads are obviously used a great deal,” she said. “It’s less costly to the taxpayers in the long run if we do it on a yearly basis.”

Cartwright said the project tentatively will cost about $122,000, and the lowest bidder was Barbicas Construction of Akron.

She said the project is on hold until mid-August because an Ohio Public Works project must first be completed on Pleasant Valley Way.

That project is a $120,000 culvert replacement that will begin July 19 and is scheduled for completion Aug. 18, though Cartwright said it shouldn’t take the full month. An Ohio Public Works grant is funding nearly $100,000 of the cost.

“We just had to make sure that project is finished before the paving begins,” she said.

The trustees also discussed a $7,000 grant from the Mahoning County Green Team for a fall leaf-removal program.

Trustee Tony Betille said last year was the trial run, and only residents in a small portion of the township were able to participate. The township provided bags for the leaves and the pickup service.

“I would like to see this for the whole township his year,” he said. “Last year was a test, so we can’t do a test again.”

Cartwright said because they’re receiving the same amount as last year, the trustees will need to sit down with the Green Team to determine how much it would cost for the entire township to participate,

“We do have money in our recycling account we can use for that,” Cartwright said. “By our next meeting we should have the program laid out.”
