Bishop makes priest appointments

Bishop George V. Murry has made the following appointments for St. Michael the Archangel Church in Canton.

The Rev. Donald King was named pastor and the Rev. Brian Cline, associate pastor.

The appointments are effective Aug. 7.

The Rev. Matthew Albright, associate pastor at St. Michael, was named to the faculty at John F. Kennedy High School in Warren, effective Aug. 16.

Bishop Murry accepted the retirement of the Rev. Bradford Helman, pastor of St. Michael, effective Aug. 1. Father Helman has served there since July 1, 1995.

Father King was ordained June 27, 1974. He has served as associate pastor at St. Joan of Arc Church and St. Paul Church, both Canton; St. Mary Church in Warren and Holy Family Church in Poland. Father King was director of the office of vocations and the office of the permanent diaconate for the diocese. He was a member of the Formation Faculty at North American College in Rome for four years.

Father King’s most recent assignment was pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church in Warren. He is a member of the priests council and the diocesan priests’ personnel board and has served as dean of Trumbull County deanery.

Father Albright was ordained June 2, 2007. He was appointed associate pastor at St. Michael. Father Albright is a member of the Vocations Director Advisory Committee.

Father Cline was ordained May 29, 2010. This is his first priestly assignment.

Serbian Day liturgy

The 78th annual Serbian Day picnic will take place Sunday at Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church, 53 Laird Ave.

Festivities will begin with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. with the Very Rev. Stavrophor John Rajlich, parish priest of Holy Trinity and dean of the Cleveland Deanery of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America.

Responses will be sung by the Holy Trinity Choir directed by Olga Tatalovich.

After the service, traditional foods will be available for sale in the hall and on the church grounds.

A Serbian band will entertain from 4 to 9 p.m. in the pavilion.

Concert at church

Trinity United Methodist Church, 30. W. Front St., will present Joseph Petros III in a concert at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 1.

Petros graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2008, where he studied organ with Dr. Craig Cramer and piano with Dr. John Blacklow.

He was twice the winner of the Notre Dame Concerto Competition, which awarded him the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Notre Dame Symphony Orchestra in 2006 and in 2008.

Petros studied organ with Dr. Daniel Laginya at St. Columba Cathedral.

He attends Notre Dame Law School and continues to perform on the organ and the piano.

Ring bells

Members of Grace Church of the Nazarene, 5253 W. Webb Road, will meet at 3 p.m. Aug. 1 to sing “How Great Thou Art.”

The church has this tradition to praise God in perilous times and to use music as an integral part of the praise.

The church also is seeking participation by other churches by ringing their bells or carillons from 2:30 to 3.

The project follows the idea from Psalm 68:4, “Sing unto God, sing praises to His name.”

Retreat set

Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will host a retreat Aug. 18-21 titled “Continuity Between Life and Soil.” Leaders will be Sister Barbara O’Donnell, eco-spirituality associate, and Frank Romeo, director of land management emeritus at the Villa. Participants will explore a portion of the 726-acre property learning about soil, the seasons and the harvest for the continuity of life. Participants should wear casual clothing, including good walking shoes and a hat. The cost is $199 and includes room and board. Handcart trek

More than 200 youths and adult leaders put modern conveniences aside from July 15-17 to gain a deeper understanding of their pioneer heritage, an appreciation for family and develop a stronger faith. Much like the early pioneers of the Mormon Church in the 1800s, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the Youngstown and Akron Stakes walked 20 miles, pulling handcarts. Youth gathered July 15 at Pymatuning State Park in Jamestown, Pa., where they were divided into groups. The trip ended in Dorset.Joshua Snyder of Rootstown, was company captain; Jim Moore of Youngstown, trek director and trail boss; Bill Betts of Hartford, equipment manager with the assistance of Joe Gruber of Pulaski, Pa.; and Steve Pocock of the Canton Ward, Akron Stake, was co-director of the trek and back camp manager. A medical crew was supervised by Dr. Paul McPherson of the Youngstown Ward.

Choir anniversary

Greater Liberty Baptist Church, 66 10th St., will mark the 64th anniversary of it adult choir during a program at 4 p.m. Sunday. Various choirs will perform. The Rev. Carl Anderson is pastor.
