A Youngstown company has been awarded a contract to do work on the Ohio & Erie Canal.

The National Park Service recently awarded general construction contractor Abcon Inc., located on South Avenue, a $1,845,400 contract to replace the Tinkers Creek Aqueduct on the canal.

The construction, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will replace temporary steel pipes and overflows with a new structure and rehabilitate the aqueduct’s sandstone abutments and center pier.

The aqueduct, designed to carry the canal and towpath over Tinkers Creek, was the only watered aqueduct in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. In 2000, the park determined that the aqueduct was beyond repair, and it was closed to the public.

The Abcon project will re-establish the uninterrupted flow of water in the Ohio & Erie Canal.
