Scrappers’ errors help Crosscutters to victory

Staff report

WILLIAMSPORT, PA.

Three errors were too much for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to overcome on Thursday as they lost to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-2.

Owen Dew (1-2) took the loss after allowing three runs in the six innings he pitched.

The Crosscutters (20-14) tagged relievers Casey Gaynor and Dale Dickerson with four runs in the eighth inning to turn the close contest into a rout.

In the first inning, Crosscutters leadoff batter Cesar Hernandez was hit with a pitch from Dew. He advanced to third base on Aaron Altherr’s single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Alvarez.

Carlos Moncrief’s third homer of the season tied the game for the Scrappers (14-20).

The Crosscutters regained the lead in the fifth inning after Matthew McConnell and Edgar Duran singled. Second baseman Dan DeGeorge’s fielding error allowed McConnell to score for a 2-1 Williamsport lead.

The Crosscutters tallied again an inning later when James Klocke doubled and scored on Jeff Cusick’s hit.

In the seventh inning, two-out walks to Brian Heere and Kevin Fontanez led to the Scrappers’ other run. Giovanny Urshela singled to send home Heere to reduce the Crosscutters’ lead to 3-2.
