1587: An English colony fated to vanish under mysterious circumstances is established on Roanoke Island off North Carolina.

1796: Cleveland, Ohio, is founded by Gen. Moses Cleaveland.

1916: A bomb goes off during a Preparedness Day parade in San Francisco, killing 10 people.

1937: The Senate rejects President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s proposal to add more justices to the Supreme Court.

1943: American forces led by Gen. George S. Patton capture Palermo, Sicily, during World War II.

1995: Susan Smith is convicted by a jury in Union, S.C. of first-degree murder for drowning her two sons. (She is later sentenced to life in prison, and will not be eligible for parole until 2024.)

1985: The Youngstown area is well represented at the 1985 Cleveland Browns training camp with tackles Rick Burnot, YSU; Aaron Brown, Warren Western Reserve; J.C. Mayor Patrick Ungaro lauds the choice of the Voyager Motor Inn as the site for a proposed federal courthouse in downtown Youngstown.

1970: Atty. Paul L. Booth, 75, founder of the McGuffey Center and prominent civic leader, dies of a heart attack in Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being stricken in downtown Warren.

The Youngstown Development Review Committee approves a mall-like super block for Central Square and the business district and construction of housing for the elderly on the site that had been proposed for a new downtown post office.

1960: Two girls using a popular shortcut past a storage yard at the Roemer Works of Sharon Steel in Farrell are caught in an explosion caused by an accumulation of gas. Bonita Ann Curtician, 14, is killed and Deborah C. Yeager, 8, is badly burned.

City Council stands by legislation requiring the retirement of police and firemen at the age of 65 over appeals to amend the law by the firefighters association.

Youngstown’s annual citywide swimming meet is set for July 28 at Borts Pool.

1935: Raymond L. “Curly” Johnson, 33, beloved boys secretary of the YMCA and one of the greatest football stars ever developed by South High School, dies after a 10-month illness. He had been in charge of Camp Fitch for 10 years.
