Melvin Shaw indicted in killing of teen girl


YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County grand jury today indicted an 18-year-old city man for the shooting death of a teen girl.

Melvin S. Shaw II, 18, of Idlewood Avenue is charged with the aggravated murder of Tracee Banks, 17, and attempted murder of Jamel Turner, 18, an Ohio State University football recruit. The shooting occurred June 19 at a Manchester Avenue home on the city's West Side.

Shaw also was indicted on two counts of felonious assault and one count of shooting into a home. Each count has a weapons specifications. If convicted, he could face life in prison without parole.

The case was brought more into the public spotlight July 14 when Shaw was arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court. After the arraignment, family and friends of the victim and suspect fought just outside the courtroom.

Michael Peace, 38, Wade Shaw, 35, Ovidio Santiago, 40, and Clyde Hudson, 24, were arrested for their roles in the brawl.
