Fontanez’s double ignites Scrappers
STAFF report
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
Kevin Fontanez’s third double in two nights helped the Mahoning Valley Scrappers salvage a blown ninth-inning lead.
With the game tied 4-4 in the 11th inning, Fontanez led off with a double then scored when Daniel DeGeorge hit a fielder’s choice on Wednesday in the Scrappers’ 6-4 victory over the State College Spikes in a New York-Penn League baseball game.
Brian Heere then contributed a RBI single that sent home Jordan Casas with an insurance run.
In the Spikes’ final at-bat, Scrappers reliever John Goryl returned to the mound for his second inning. The Spikes immediately had two runners on base as Kevin Rucker singled and Matthew Curry reached on an error.
Goryl (1-2) settled down, retiring Chase Lyles on a popup and getting Walker Gourley to ground into a game-ending double play.
The Scrappers led 4-2 going to the bottom of the ninth inning, but reliever Casey Sadler was tagged for two runs to force extra innings.
Fontanez’s lead-off single in the seventh inning ignited the Scrappers’ two-run outburst for a 4-2 lead. Heere and Giovanny Urshela had RBIs.
