Spotlight Dance Academy to perform at amphitheater

Spotlight Dance Academy will present a free performance from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 1 at the amphitheater at Lake Milton State Park beach in Craig Beach.

The academy had its fifth annual dance recital June 20 with the theme “Time Warp.” The show included music and dances from the ’60s through today. Students of the academy, which is on Mahoning Avenue, ranging in age from 3 to 20 performed routines in ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, bellydance, lyrical and Polynesian.

The school’s competitive-dance team performed several routines, including a seven-minute production of “ Polynesian Paradise,” which has won Platinum awards and Most Entertaining Act at several competitions.

The junior group Disco Divas also received Platinum awards at several competitions and won the Critics Choice Award at the OnStage New York competition, topping 300 other routines.

The teaching staff also received honors this season. Melissa Bann, owner/choreographer/teacher, and Megan Bright, recreational and competitive teacher/choreographer, received Top Teacher Awards at Star Systems Talent competition, and also won special judges awards for their outstanding work in dance and with the children.

The SDA competitive team won three national titles at a competition in the Poconos earlier this year. National winners included: Megan Bright, Mallori Bright, Kenzie Diver, Lexie Drewek, Emily Williams, Lauren and Taylor Lindquist, Jordon Startton, Madyson Hanshaw, Bre and Brittany Coonce, Aaron Lamacusa, Jessica Jarvis, Brittany Tennant and Kelcey Diver.
