Staff report

State college, Pa.

In the midst of a rough season, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers may have found a diamond on the diamond.

Starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky, a non-drafted free agent from Wright State, pitched five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.04 and lead the Scrappers to a 4-0 win over State College on Tuesday.

Kaminsky gave up three hits and two walks, striking out four. He entered the game with a 2.37 ERA, which was tied for eighth-best in the New York-Penn League.

James Reichenbach pitched two scoreless innings and Clayton Ehlert closed it out with two perfect innings, striking out five.

No. 9 hitter Dan DeGeorge went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and two stolen bases for the Scrappers (13-19), who entered the game tied with Auburn for last place in the Pinckney Division.

Chase Burnette added two hits, including a triple, and an RBI to raise his batting average to .316 and Kevin Fontanez had two doubles and scored twice.

Catcher Diego Seastrunk had a hit and threw out two baserunners.

The Scrappers were without shortstop Tyler Cannon, who was a late scratch from Tuesday’s game. He will likely miss at least three more games with a shoulder injury he’s been battling since the season started.
