Court hears Irish north-south soccer case

LAUSANNE, Switzerland

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has heard a case on the right to select Ireland’s top young soccer players for international duty.

The Northern Ireland federation challenged on Monday what it believes is poaching by its southern neighbor, after recent political peace granted players dual nationality.

Northern Ireland appealed after FIFA allowed 18-year-old Daniel Kearns to switch allegiance to the Republic of Ireland despite not even having a grandparent born there, which is the usual minimal requirement for players to switch nationalities. The ruling is expected in several weeks.

Attendance, wagering down at race track

INGLEWOOD, Calif.

Attendance and wagering during Hollywood Park’s spring-summer meet dropped by 10 percent each, extending a trend at many U.S. tracks as the economy continues to sputter.

Attendance during the 57-day meet that ended Sunday averaged 12,676, down 10.4 percent from the average of 14,149 during a 55-day meet last year.

The average wagering handle of $4,794,545 declined 10.6 percent from last year’s average of $5,365,293.

Track president Jack Liebau says officials are disappointed with the numbers, but they thought changing the purse structure to benefit lower level horses was a good idea.

Brazil to invest $3B on airports for 2014 WCup

BRASILIA, Brazil

Brazil says it will invest nearly $3 billion to renovate and expand its airports ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

Government officials also guarantee investments of about $400 million in ports, hoping to make sure the country is ready to host soccer’s biggest tournament.

Authorities signed a document Monday securing the investments and creating a timetable for work related to transportation and stadium construction, two of the areas receiving most of the criticism from FIFA because of delays.
