An 84-year-old Plaza Drive Northeast woman reported Saturday morning that she sent a check for $3,964 to a company in Spain that told her over the phone to send the money so she could receive her lottery winnings. Huntington Bank reported that the check was cashed.

The board of education will meet in special session at 7 p.m. today in the high school library. Action is planned on a resolution for a proposed 13.5-mill, five-year levy to generate $715,000 annually and to modify a part of the school district’s financial recovery plan for transportation.

Neighborhood groups to meet Wednesday

Youngstown

Community leaders from four neighborhood groups representing the South Side and Boardman Township will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Newport Public Library to discuss common issues related to their respective neighborhoods. The groups include: Newport Neighborhood Association, Handel’s Block Watch, Boulevard Park Block Watch and Forrest Glen Homeowners Association. The meeting is being organized by Handle’s Block Watch and the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative.

Several of the groups are a year or less old, and the meeting will be the first opportunity for them to connect. Officials from both Boardman and Youngstown are to attendance.

“The purpose of this meeting is to begin to connect the neighborhood groups. Some of the groups are relatively new, but getting together to discuss common concerns, learn how each group is dealing with specific problems and sharing contact information is always helpful. We hope this is the first of many such meetings,” said Dave Starr, president of Handel’s Block Watch.

A home invasion and shooting shortly after 3 p.m. Monday left Richard White, 22, in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center, where another victim, Lakiesha Hill, 31, was treated for cuts and bruises on the left side of her head.

Police said three armed intruders entered a home in the 500 block of Mabel Street. A suspect with a sawed-off shotgun struck Hill in the face and ripped a gold earring from her ear. White fought with the intruders and suffered a gunshot to the left arm and side.

There was an open line to 911 and the commotion could be heard.
