SALEM

Superintendent Tom Bratten on Monday explained the Ohio Core Physical Education Graduation Requirements that are required by law.

Each school district can exempt some students from physical education who have taken part in interscholastic athletics, marching band or cheerleading for at least two full seasons. Those in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps must participate for two years.

School shows, non-sponsored school athletics and other activities don’t count.

“Generally, athletes want to take physical education,” Bratton said.

He added that the Ohio Department of Education is preparing to release academic reports on all Ohio districts and he expects Salem to do well.

Board member Nick Bush said he is still working on a long-term planning process for the district.

The plan began in early spring and is expected to run for 10 to 15 years. It is to be unveiled later this year and will focus “on the district ability to achieve goals and the next phase,” Bush said.

“We have asked decision-makers about changes on becoming a better district,” he added.

He has met with 50 to 60 families about what the district needs to be the best in the area.

The process involves everything from online surveys and transportation issues to facilities, random calls and talks with school graduates.

“I think it’s going to be great,” Bush said. “There’s no downside to knowing your customer.”
