NEW CASTLE, Pa.

Three low-cost spay and neuter clinics for cats have been scheduled here by Animal Friends of Pittsburgh in cooperation with the Lawrence County Animal Relief Fund.

The services are open to all Lawrence County residents with annual household income of less than $42,000. The first clinic will be Aug. 14.

Due to limited space, surgeries will be by appointment only. Appointments can be made by calling 724-535-4873.

The cost will be $30 to spay or neuter a cat. A special rate is available for feral cats. Owners should bring a valid rabies vaccination certificate or their cat will be vaccinated. Other services available that day will be a $10 distemper shot, a $25 test for feline leukemia and a $10 vaccination for feline leukemia. (The leukemia shot requires a negative test first.) Flea and ear-mite treatment and eartipping, if indicated, also are available.

Additional clinics for cats will be Sept. 4 and 18. The procedures will be done at Animal Friends’ Mobile Resource Center, a van that is staffed by a licensed veterinarian and qualified support staff. The van will be parked at the Lawrence County Government Center where space will be provided for an animal-recovery room.

Jolene Miklos of Animal Friends said that low-cost spaying and neutering also are available for dogs. Owners should call Animal Friends at 800-SPAYPGH to make arrangements to have the operation done by a participating local veterinarian.

Animal Friends is a nonprofit companion-animal resource center established in 1943. For more information about low-cost spay/neuter services for dogs, cats and rabits, call 800-SPAYPGH, or visit the website at www.ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org.
