SJIHM parade float takes third in contest

Neighbors | Submitted.Mike Slanina (left), Marcus Bosworth, RJ Gavalier, Liza Askey, Bonnie Lombel and Allysia Mullarkey traveled on a truck through Austintown's annual Fourth of July Parade. .The truck was donated by Delliquadri Landscaping for St. Joseph & Immaculate Heart of Mary School students and parents to decorate for the parade. The school was awarded third place, which included a trophy and cash award.

The St. Joseph and Immaculate Heart of Mary School family “Rocked Around the Block” in the 1950s-themed annual Fourth of July parade in Austintown.

Family volunteers constructed the float which featured a soda shop and a sock hop. Fifties music streamed from the float with such classics as “Rockin’ Robin,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Yakety Yak.”

The SJIHM Eagle mascot, dressed as Elvis, entertained the crowd and led a group of students and parents in cheering “SJ-IHM” and “Eagle Pride” as the float made its way down Raccoon Road.

Delliquadri Landscaping donated the use of a truck, trailer, hay bales and a driver for the parade. The SJIHM float was awarded a third place, which includes a trophy and a cash award.

SJIHM serves the community by providing a Catholic education for kindergarten through eighth grade and is in the process of launching a preschool for the next school year.
