Three scouts of Boy Scout Troop 25 at Canfield United Methodist Church will head off to scouting history at the end of July to take part in the 2010 100th Anniversary National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va.
Donny Duda, Anthony Bettile, and DJ Doran will travel to Washington, D.C. to take part in the Boy Scouts of America’s Grand Centennial Parade which will take place July 25 at 1 p.m., marching from 7th to 17th Street on Constitution Ave. The last time that the National Boy Scouts of America held a parade in Washington was for the first Jamboree in 1937.
They will arrive at Fort A.P. Hill July 26 and begin a 10-day experience through Aug. 4 that they will never forget.
A National Boy Scout Jamboree packs the most fun-filled, exciting and fantastic experiences for a scout in one location at the same time. There is so much to do at a jamboree that one will not have time in 10 days to do it all. They will be a part of the seventh largest city in Virginia for those 10 days which will have over 40,000 scouts, adults and staff camping or housed on site at the fort.
Duda is a Star Scout in Troop 25 and will attend the Jamboree as a member of Jamboree Troop 1330 from the Buckeye Council in Canton. Bettile and Doran are Life Scouts in the troop and are members of Jamboree Troop 1323 of the Greater Western Reserve Council headquartered in Warren.
The boys will also be a part of a Boy Scouts of America nationwide event to celebrate the organization and reflect on what it has meant to millions of America’s youth. For the first time in history, at 8 p.m. July 31, the Scouting family — past, present and future — will be able to take part in a special nationwide broadcast.
A Shining Light Across America will bring the Centennial Celebration Show from the 100th Anniversary National Scout Jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Va., to communities across the country via Webcast and satellite transmission. This is expected to be the last National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, which is the eighth Jamboree hosted there since 1981.
It is hoped beginning in 2013, all National BSA Jamborees will be held at the new National Jamboree, Training, and High Adventure site at The Summit: the Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Glen Jean, W.Va., at which construction has begun.
The National BSA is expected to host the 2019 World Scout Jamboree at that site. The last World Jamboree hosted by the National BSA was in 1967 at Farragut State Park in Idaho.
