Crowe’s clutch hit helps Indians top Tigers 4-3

CLEVELAND (AP) — Trevor Crowe singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning and the Cleveland Indians beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader Saturday.

Fausto Carmona (9-7) outlasted Detroit’s Justin Verlander in a matchup of All-Star right-handers. Carmona fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but got stronger while the Tigers’ ace faded.

Crowe’s hit off reliever Phil Coke (5-1) scored Matt LaPorta, who had doubled with two outs. Crowe was thrown out trying for second to end the inning.

Carmona left in the eighth after yielding a leadoff double to Johnny Damon. Joe Smith got Magglio Ordonez to ground out and fanned Miguel Cabrera. Left-hander Rafael Perez then retired Brennan Boesch on a groundout.
