Civil War re-enactment comes to Canfield

Argus Lodge No. 545 F. and A.M. will host the sixth biannual Civil War re-enactment Saturday and July 25 at Argus Park, 5050 Shields Road in Canfield.

Located on 42 acres in Canfield Township, Argus Park will host hundreds of Union and Confederate troops in what has become one of the largest re-enactment events in the region.

The Argus event has been the backdrop for a motion picture production and has been featured in a national re-enactment magazine.

“Outside of a national re-enactment such as at Gettysburg, this is one of the very few regional events that feature ground charges to simulate artillery explosions,” said Greg Anstrom, Argus Lodge event organizer.

Gates open to the public at 10 a.m. and battle re-enactments will be fought at 2 p.m. both days. General admission is $5; children 10 and under are admitted free.

Concessions will be available throughout the event.

Spectators will be able to visit with soldiers from the North and South, shop at period sutlers tents and watch and feel a Civil War cannon being fired.

The cannons being fired were used in the making of the movie “Gettysburg,” ground explosions, cannonballs shot from mortars, and a Gatling Gun demonstration are all part of the action.

Prior to the battles visitors can see and hear re-enactments from President Lincoln, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Gen. Sherman and Gen. Robert E. Lee. Portrayals of Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart and Nathan Bedford Forrest will be featured. Visit www.apcivilwar.com for information.
