An Aravesta Avenue man was in the Mahoning County jail accused of assaulting a township police officer.

David D. Bell, 31, was charged with assault on a police officer, a felony, and two misdemeanor counts of obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

Police were called about 6:15 p.m. Thursday on a report of a man, later identified as Bell breaking a window at Ohio Carpet, Market Street.

A police officer saw a man matching Bell’s description, knock on a door on Aravesta and yelled for him to stop, but Bell ran into the house, a police report said.

Police surrounded the house and Bell exited the house in a “threatening manner,” the report said. Two police officers blocked him when he ignored commands to stop. When the officers tried to restrain him, a report states Bell pushed and then punched one of them in the mouth.
