15 students from area to attend NEOUCOM MEDCAMP

Staff report

ROOTSTOWN

Fifteen area middle-school students are taking part in a three-day medical camp designed to whet their interest in the medical field.

The group is among 51 students from across Northeast Ohio visiting the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy starting today. This is the 20th annual MEDCAMP.

The program was created to get young students interested in the basic sciences related to medicine and pharmacy while exposing them to career opportunities in those fields.

Participants are given “hands-on” experiences in biomedical science workshops involving research, clinical problem-solving and an introduction to the fields of clinical medicine and pharmacy. The students attend lectures and participate in anatomy, pharmacy, physical diagnosis, physiology and other labs. They also join physicians, graduate students and NEOUCOM professors in performing hands-on activities such as taking blood pressure, reading EKGs and identifying bacteria under a microscope.
