LA blaze showers firefighters with molten titanium

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Molten bits of titanium have peppered firefighters battling a spectacular blaze in a South Los Angeles metals firm.

Two firefighters are being treated for minor injuries.

More than 100 firefighters were initially dispatched at 11:43 p.m. Tuesday to the east Slauson Boulevard industrial building, but fire bosses quickly ordered reinforcements and 220 firefighters are battling the blaze this morning.

Battalion Chief Mario Ruida says there was an explosion at one point that showered firefighters with fiery chips of titanium. The roof and walls inside the building eventually collapsed, and towering palm trees exploded in flames.

Capt. Gail Manning says firefighters will likely be on scene all day.
