Historic cemetery offers walking tours
CLEVELAND
The East Cleveland Township Cemetery — 12 acres in University Circle — has been forgotten by some Clevelanders and is unknown to the majority. It has been surrounded by urban legend for decades and embroiled in litigation since its founding Aug. 31, 1859. More than 17,000 people have been laid to rest within its gates, many of whom were instrumental in creating the Cleveland we know today. There have never been any racial, ethnic nor religious lines drawn in the cemetery, despite its date of origin.
On July 31, the East Cleveland Township Cemetery Foundation will host free walking tours of the cemetery to the public from noon to 4 p.m. There are 173 known Civil War veterans interred in the cemetery, and the stories of 16 of them will be told at the top of each hour. The cemetery is at 1621 E. 118th St., which is just north of Euclid Avenue. For more information, contact Nancy Adams at adamsnancy@ectcf.org.
