Suspect to be arraigned today in June 19 murder

An 18-year-old city man was arrested Tuesday in the murder of a 17-year-old girl.
Melvin S. Shaw II, of Idlewood Avenue, is the sole suspect in the June 19 murder of Tracee Banks, 17, and the attempted murder of Jamel Turner, 18, Youngstown police said.
Shaw turned himself in to authorities without incident and will be arraigned at 10 a.m. today in Youngstown Municipal Court.
Banks and Turner, a former Ursuline High football standout and Ohio State University football recruit, were shot at 3:23 a.m. June 19 at 63 Manchester Ave. on the city’s West Side.
Banks was found dead in the home, and both she and Turner had multiple gunshot wounds. The 4-year-old girl Banks had been baby-sitting was found in an upstairs bedroom unharmed.
Police named Shaw, who previously had dated Banks, as a suspect days after the shooting but did not issue a warrant until Tuesday.
“He is the only suspect at this time, and yes, it takes a while to develop information to get a warrant,” said Capt. Rod Foley of Youngstown police.
An hour after the warrant was issued, Shaw turned himself in, Foley said.
Turner had been taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment and has been released.
Shelly Poe, a spokeswoman for the OSU football program, said June 20 there would be no further comment.
On that date, Poe was asked by an Associated Press reporter if Turner was still a recruit in good standing and replied: “He signed in February. That’s really where that is. Until he would report to campus, we can’t really, I mean we don’t grade them by one way or another.”
This is the second shooting Turner has been involved in this year. Turner was the victim of an April 16 drive-by when unidentified assailants opened fire on a vehicle in which he was riding on Interstate 680, hitting him in the ankle and hip.
