2 shootings in less than a week at Ohio hospital

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) — Police say a man in his 80s shot himself at a hospital near Cleveland and that he was possibly inspired by a murder-suicide at the same clinic last week.

Investigators say the man pulled his car up to the emergency room at the Cleveland Clinic’s Hillcrest Hospital on Tuesday afternoon in Mayfield Heights and shot himself twice with a handgun.

The man’s identity has not been released. He is listed in critical but stable condition.

Police say another elderly man on Friday shot his 77-year-old wife to death in her hospital room, then killed himself. During a news conference Tuesday, Mayfield Heights Police Chief Joe Donnelly said he believed the new shooting was a “copycat situation.”

The hospital has increased security.
