Trial for Guantanamo detainee to proceed in NY

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge in New York has ruled that the government can proceed with the trial of the first Guantanamo Bay detainee to be charged in a civilian court.

Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan on today rejected a request by lawyers for Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani to dismiss the indictment against their client.

Ghailani is charged in the August 1998 bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa that resulted in the deaths of 224 people, including 12 Americans.

Four others were convicted in the bombings in federal court in Manhattan in 2001. They were each sentenced to life in prison.

Ghailani’s trial is set to begin Sept. 27.
