1863: Deadly rioting against the Civil War military draft erupts in New York City.

1960: John F. Kennedy wins the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot at his party’s convention in Los Angeles, outdrawing rivals including Lyndon B. Johnson, Stuart Symington and Adlai Stevenson.

1972: George McGovern claims the Democratic presidential nomination at the party’s convention in Miami Beach.

1978: Lee Iacocca is fired as president of Ford Motor Co. by chairman Henry Ford II.

1985: A simmering feud between two Ohio Supreme Court justices, Democratic Chief Justice Frank D. Celebrezze, and Republican Justice Andrew Douglas, boils over with each holding press conferences to trade accusations.

A civil rights lawsuit brought against Canfield and its police department by two black Youngstowners whose car was stopped for allegedly failing to use turn signals is settled for $9,000 that will be paid by Canfield’s insurance carrier.

1970: Jay Kocak, 15, of Boardman wins the Youngstown Soap Box Derby on his fifth try.

United Auto Workers Local 1112 threatens a strike against General Motors at the Lordstown Plant in a dispute over production quotas on the Chevrolet truck assembly line.

1960: The Austintown Board of Education hires four teachers, Constance Sperry and JoAnn Baker as elementary teachers at $4,400; John Loth, high school language, $5,900, and John Broderick, commercial, $5,500.

Appearing at the Idora Park Ballroom, Louis Armstrong, the Ambassador of Jazz, and his all-star band. Admission, $2.50.

1935: A spectacular bolt of lightning strikes on the East Side, centered near the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ennemoser, 351 Euclid Ave. The bolt blows the kitchen door into the parlor and shatters windows.

Ray A. Noble, Mahoning County relief administrator, is transferred to Athens County, where he will oversee eight counties, and Ralph M. Vail will come from Akron to become WPA supervisor for Mahoning County.
