Carol Killian “ended up with the briefcase,” which translates into being drafted as chairwoman of this year’s Fun Fest committee.
She’s helped out on past events, so this was a natural progression.
There are new attractions at this year’s Fun Fest, scheduled July 23-25.
One event is a Little Miss Hubbard Contest with two age brackets, 3- to 5-year-olds and 6- to 8-year-olds. Contestants will be judged on how they answer some simple questions.
Another addition is the best-decorated bicycle and float in the parade, which will be at 5 p.m. July 24. Killian said those interested in participating must line up at 4 p.m. on Hall Avenue by the middle school. The parade route will be east on West Liberty Street then north on North Main Street.
The theme of the Fun Fest is “Christmas in July,” so entrants should keep that in mind. The fest takes place in the parking lot at the city administration building, 220 W. Liberty St. “It’s a central location,” Killian said.
Float entries generally are from Hubbard High School clubs and football team, service clubs in the city and area stores.
“Last year, Love’s gave out Twinkies, and that was a big hit,” Killian said. Candy is the norm.
Food is another huge drawing card, Killian said. Vendors, the majority of which are local organizations and churches, offer selections such as gyros, meatball sandwiches, lemonade, funnel cakes, elephant ears and ice cream.
Entertainment also plays a role in the fest. “A big draw is the J&J’s dance studio,” Killian said. Parents and grandparents turn out in support of young performers.
Music at Madison, a cabaret show originated by Rod Coonce, is another popular attraction.
Applications for the Little Miss Hubbard Contest and vendors are available at the mayor’s office at the city administration building and Ron’s Sign Shop, 758 N. Main St. There is a $5 entry fee for the contest.
