Poland softball team earns national honors

Poland High softball coach Reid Lamport was honored by the National Softball Association as Softball Man of the Year Friday at McCune Fields.

Also, Poland junior Erin Gabriel was honored as the No. 1 player of the year in Ohio by the group.

There were 60 teams playing in a tournament coordinated by the National Softball Association.

Cosentino to sign at Division II college

Chris Cosentino is expected to sign a letter of intent to attend Salem International U. to play baseball at the NCAA Div. II school in Salem, West Virginia.

The 18-year-old recent Poland High graduate, a son of Dr. Ed and Mary Ann Cosentino, played four years for the Bulldogs for whom he was an outfielder and pitcher.

He currently plays in the Class B League with OTN Performance.

Golfers and sponsors wanted for outing

The Brett Wilcox Charity Golf Outing will be July 25 at Lakeside Golf Course, 2404 SE River Road in Lake Milton.

The fee to enter is $65 per person or $250 for a foursome and includes cart, greens fees and dinner. There will be donuts and coffee at registration and the four-man scramble will be an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

A skins game and 50/50 raffle will be available. The hole-in-one prize will be a 2010 Chevy Cobalt donated by Stadium in Salem.

Hole sponsors are needed. Fees are $100 for hole sponsor, $120 flag sponsor, $200 bronze sponsor, $250 silver sponsor and $350 gold corporate sponsor.

Golfers must register by July 12 and space will be limited to 144 golfers.

All proceeds will benefit Austintown’s 2-year-old Brett Wilcox’s battle with A.M.L. Leukemia.

Ultimate frisbee tournament planned

Poland’s cross country team is hoping to host an Ultimate frisbee tournament in July.

Teams must have two of seven spots on the field filled by females or left vacant. Teams with 10 players with at least three females are suggested. A $100 entry fee will guarantee teams at least three games. Individuals may register for $15 and will be placed on a team with other players at the discretion of the tournament director. The tournament will be played at Poland Township Park in July. Specific dates will be determined based on feedback from interested teams and players. Baseball travel team to hold workouts

The Ohio Glaciers 13U travel program for 2011 will conduct workouts in mid/late July at the Glacier Dome in Struthers. Contact Rich at 724-651-9347.

Class B baseball looking for fall teams

The Class B team seeks players to fill two fall teams: 13-15 year olds and 16-18. There are tryouts for next year’s three teams: 13-14, 15-16 and 17-18. Call 724-971-6105.
