Golden String, a nonprofit organization, is asking area residents to help the agency win a $50,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project by voting online by July 31.

The organization raises funds to provide recreation and socialization activities to children and adults with disabilities in the Mahoning Valley area.

The grant would fund a handicapped-accessible therapy pool for adults with special needs at The Purple Cat Day Program in Coitsville, which would promote health and wellness to a physically underactive population.

The applicant receiving the most votes in the $50,000 category would receive $50,000, and the other applicants in the top 10 would receive lesser grants, a Golden String spokeswoman said. As of Friday. the Golden String project was 93rd out of 1,102 applicants/projects.

To vote and help Golden String get its pool, go to www.refresheverything.com/joespooldream. Individuals can cast multiple votes, but only one per day.

Golden String is calling its project The Joe Gallagher Pool. It was the Birthday Wish Project of Gallagher who, at 68, is one of the company’s oldest clients.

Diagnosed with Down syndrome, Gallagher dreams of swimming like Michael Phelps at the Special Olympics.
