Cooney retires after 46 years at Mooney

After more than four decades of service, Cardinal Mooney said goodbye to its assistant principal and friend.

Cardinal Mooney High School administrator James Cooney has retired after 46 years of school service. His retirement went into effect June 30.

In honor of his scholastic contributions, a retirement dinner was held at Holy Family Parish Center June 28. Family members, friends and school staff were all in attendance to honor the former assistant principal.

In honor of Cooney, the James M. Cooney Scholarship is currently being established. Those wanting to contribute to the scholarship should contact the high school at 330-788-5007.

Cooney said it feels good to retire after 46 years and plans to take time to relax. He didn’t have a particular year in mind to retire — this year just felt right.

“Someone once told me, ‘you will know when it’s time.’ Well it’s time,” Cooney said.
