Godspell looking for a few good actors

Auditions for Godspell will be 2 p.m. today and Sunday at St. Michael Family Life Center Stage, state Route 46 in Canfield.

Those auditioning should be 16 or older and will be expected to sing a refrain from a prepared song, preferably from Godspell (bring sheet music) and recite a prepared 30-second monologue.

Create concrete leaf castings for the garden

Pam Baytos will teach a cast leaf workshop Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Participants will learn how to use a hosta or rhubarb leaf as a mold to create leaf castings for a garden ornament or birdbath. The cost is $20 for Fellows Riverside Garden members and $26 for nonmembers. To register, call the gardens at 330-740-7116.

Bring the kids for a drop-in visit to the Family Garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens on sunny Fridays to plant and water flowers or to read a book. Join a book discussion

Brisk walk, botany and breakfast offered

Return to Lincoln Park for tough hike

Hike for the health of it and explore some of the 200 additional acres of this City of Youngstown park July 18 at 10 a.m.

Wear old shoes to hike along and in Dry Run, the lake that fills McKelvey Lake. Hikers should meet at the Lincoln Park Pavilion for this difficult 4-mile hike.

Take the dog to the Doggie Daze Festival

Join Angels for Animals and area animal rescues at the fifth annual Doggie Daze Festival and Adopt-A-Thon today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 4750 W. South Range Road in Canfield.

Bring your Corvette to Greenwood for a cause

The Mahoning Valley Corvettes and Greenwood Chevrolet will sponsor a car show Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The show is open to Corvettes and all other cars. Entry fee is $10 and $20 if you are showing for NCCC points.

Proceeds will benefit the Hospice House and other local charities. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for all classes, including People’s Choice Award. Keen Geen will provide music and food and beverages will be available.

The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is calling all princesses and pirates to enjoy stories, games and a craft July 20 at 10 a.m. Children may dress the part. This event is for kids of all ages.

Make a splash with trash

The Green Team and Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling will present a special program based on the book “One Less Fish” by Kim Michelle Toft Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. This book is an illustration of how marine life is affected by carelessness and measures that can be taken to help. Participants can make a decorative fish from used CDs and scrap paper and receive a “Don’t Teach Your Trash to Swim” coloring book. The event is for children in grades pre-K through five.

Free hot dogs at Mill Creek MetroParks

Weather permitting, Mill Creek MetroParks will have free hot dogs for the public Mondays and Tuesdays. The hot dogs will be served Mondays at the James L. Wick Recreation Area, off McCollum Road, and Tuesdays at Scholl Recreation Area.

The hot dogs are sponsored by the Salvation Army’s Mahoning County Services. This will last through Aug. 31.

Nominate an outstanding senior or senior advocate

Nominations are being accepted for the 2010 Valley Legacy Awards. The awards will be presented to an outstanding senior and outstanding advocate for seniors Oct. 14 at the Sixth Annual Legacy Awards, where all nominees will be recognized for their good works.

Candidates should be recognized for a lifetime of working to improve the Mahoning Valley or who have provided exceptional support of older Americans through their professional, volunteer or civic roles.

Nominees must have left a lasting legacy for the community and inspired others through their work ethic, concern for others and enthusiasm for the betterment of our community.

Give the kids some adventure this summer

Boardman Park is currently taking applications for Adventure Day Camp which runs through Aug. 13.

By signing up to participate in the park’s daily educational program, children ages 6 through 12 can stay active during the summer. The program focuses on arts and crafts, team building, theatre, science and sports.

The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imagination, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities.

The Adventure Camp will run July 19 through July 30 and Aug. 2 through Aug. 13.

The camp hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Arrangements can be made for early or late pick-up.

Class of 1952 to reunite

The Rayen School class of 1952 is hosting a picnic July 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Boardman Park in the Chester Lang Pavilion.

Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Lunch includes chicken, ribs, sides, drinks, and dessert.

Raise funds for Ursuline Sisters Space is available for the “Car Trunk & Treasure Sale” this summer at the Ursuline Center in Canfield.

The event will be held Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the center on Shields Road.

Sellers can rent parking spaces for $20 each. There will be a book, food and furniture sale inside the center.

Proceeds will help fund the ministries of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.

Show off that classic car

The Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club will host Cruise Nites every Tuesday through August from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Chick-fil-a on state Route 224 near South Avenue in Boardman, weather permitting.

Registration will be $2. Plaques or $15 gas cards will be awarded and 50/50 raffles prizes will be given away nightly. All proceeds benefit Hospice of the Valley.

Church offers monthly drive-through dinner

The Western Reserve United Methodist Church on Canfield Road is offering a drive-through dinner on the first Thursday of every month starting at 4 p.m. and continuing until the food is sold out. No reservations are required, just follow the signs in the drive and someone will take your order.

The dinners are $7 and include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Recycling at the library

S.O.A.R. to new heights with girls program

Conference No. 1 for the S.O.A.R. program will take place at Mill Creek MetroPark’s Fellows Riverside Gardens July 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This program targets girls ages 8 to 12. Its purpose is to energize girls’ self-esteem and become aware of all types of negative media influences and how to manage negative emotions.

S.O.A.R. stands for Shine in their Own Amazing Way.

The conference will include a combination of yoga, art, dance, hair and skin care, and a variety of other activities. The cost is $80 and includes all classes, lunch snacks, T-shirt and any art projects.

Boardman Township Park is offering a new and improved online reservation system on its Web site.

Residents can see available rentals, rates, rental times and payment options. The payment system will accept all major credit cards.

Reservations can still be made in person at the rental office, but only payments in cash, money order or check can be accepted.

Spring clean and donate items to Goodwill

Get an early start on spring cleaning and donate to the Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries.

Items needed include clothing, housewares, small kitchen appliances, glasses, dishes and home decor.

Goodwill will take computers and computer equipment as part of the Dell Reconnect recycle program.

First Night seeks volunteers

First Night Canfield is seeking volunteers for its New Year’s Eve Celebration of the Arts.

First Night Canfield is seeking about a dozen sixth through 12th graders to establish a Junior FNC Board.

This board will be responsible for planning, fundraising and implementing the teen event between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. New Year’s Eve.

It requires an interest in seeing an event that would attract their friends and dedication.
