Neighbors | Shaiyla Hakeem .Boardman elementary students learned a dance routine to "Shake Your Groove Thing." Many of the Semi-Sweethearts attended the camp because they plan to become a Boardman High School Sweethearts when they get older.

Elementary students may not be old enough to dance with the Spartan Marching Band just yet, but they are making sure they are ready when the time comes.

The Boardman High School Spartan Sweethearts held a Semi-Sweethearts camp June 28-30. The camp was open to Boardman elementary students going into first through fourth-grade. This was the camp’s first year, but the Sweethearts plan to make it an annual event.

From 9 a.m. until noon, the Semi-Sweethearts were taught a dance routine to the 1970s hit “Shake Your Groove Thing,” by the high schoolers. They will have an opportunity to showcase their moves at the Elementary Band Show under the lights of the football field Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.

Some participated in the Semi-Sweetheart Camp as a fun summer activity, but fourth-grader Ava Colaluca had an ulterior motive. She attended the camp to help prepare her for the years to come.

“I want to be a Sweetheart when I get older,” Colaluca said.
